Dealing with the ongoing rain storms and failed sewer systems have led to massive flooding Island wide. Learning that your basement is flooding is frustrating but check out some tips below on how to deal with the aftermath.
Shut off circuit breaker if possible before stepping into the basement. Any electronics in contact with the floodwater are unsafe.
Wear protective rubber boots and gloves before you start to clean up.
Be sure to take photos/videos of the flooded area while water is there as evidence. Take photos of any damaged items as well to see if insurance will cover the cost to replace. Try to keep items as is until adjuster comes out.
Call your insurance company- Flood coverage is usually an additional coverage. However, if flooding was caused by sewer backup you may have coverage. It may be wise to consult with a local public adjuster as well.
Cleanup & deodorize: Be sure to clean up any standing water and damaged items. It may be a good idea to invest in a wet vac and a dehumidifier to rid the area of water to prevent mold growth.
